This is the first of a two-part professional development series. Part 1 lays the foundation for Part 2, which focuses on implementing the intervention. Completion of Part 1 provides participants with an enrollment key for Part 2.

The intervention, Facing Your Fears in Schools (FYF-S), was originally developed to support autistic students—or those with similar social and communication differences—in managing anxiety within a school setting. While the program was first researched with this population, FYF-S has been successfully used with a broader range of students who experience anxiety.

This course will guide you through understanding how anxiety develops and how to identify its symptoms in autistic students or those with similar social and communication differences. You will also learn about group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety and gain a detailed overview of FYF-S.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, you will:

  • Identify anxiety in students
  • Compare general anxiety symptoms in students to those that may present in neurodiverse students
  • Consider what students might be a fit for FYF-S
  • Describe the core components of CBT for anxiety

Please note: You can only implement the intervention with the purchase of FYF-S program materials, so by the time you move on to part 2 of this training series, you will need to have them on hand.  If you’d like to order them, use the Brookes Publishing page for Facing Your Fears in School. BRIDGE-RI does not receive any financial benefit from the purchase of the manual.
